The Delhi traffic police will fine all motorists found using high beam head lights of their vehicle on the city's streets.
The drive will start from Wednesday.
The drive comes in the wake of numerous incidents, where drivers in valved in road accidents claimed that the high beams from the oncoming vehicle distracted them leading to accidents. All found using high beam on lit city streets will be fined.
It is not just the complaints, but our experience also shows that use of high beams is a major contributing factor in night time accidents said DCP (Traffic) Satish Golchha.
A survey by the police revealed that most drivers were just ignorant of the rule that high beam should be used sparingly.
Many however responded that it was safer to drive with the high beam on, as it improves visibility.
While this may be true, the beam blurs the visibility for the driver of approaching vehicle leading to accidents or crashing into the central verge of the road, Said Golchha.
Under the Delhi motor vehicle rules, it is the duty of the driver to manipulate the headlights in such a manner that no danger or undue inconvenience is caused to any person.
The traffic police thus advises all motorists to use low beam when there is oncoming traffic, and on roads which have street lights.
It says that dippers can be employed more frequently. Traffic inspectors will man all major crossing in the city and challan any body found using the high beam.
